The Green Finance & Climate Strategy Institute (GFCSI) formally inducted the inaugural cohort of its Research Fellowship on Saturday, 10 October 2026, in Mogadishu, Somalia, marking an important milestone in the Institute's efforts to strengthen locally generated research and institutional capacity.

The inaugural cohort comprises six Fellows who will undertake a ten-month programme running from October 2026 to July 2027. The Fellowship is designed to develop applied research capabilities, deepen understanding of climate and environmental governance challenges, and strengthen the connection between research, policymaking and institutional development.

The cohort brings together emerging researchers with interests spanning climate finance, environmental governance, agriculture, statistics and sustainable development. The inaugural fellows are:

  • Abdiaziz Ali Azir
  • Samira Abdulkadir Aden
  • Mohamed Abdirashid Ibrahim

  • Abdimajid Said Awale

The programme is organized around nine learning modules that guide Fellows from research exploration and problem formulation through research design, evidence collection, institutional analysis and policy communication. Fellows will develop applied research papers and policy briefs addressing relevant institutional and development challenges.

The Fellowship draws on GFCSI's four interconnected strategic areas:

  1. 1.Green Transition Finance

  4. 4.Climate & Environmental Diplomacy, Strategic Advocacy & Influence

Through the Fellowship, GFCSI seeks to contribute to the development of a stronger local research community capable of producing evidence, informing public policy and supporting institutional solutions to Africa's environmental and development challenges.

The inaugural cohort represents the beginning of a longer-term effort to build research capacity and strengthen the knowledge systems needed for Somalia's green transition.
