About GFCSI
The Green Finance & Climate Strategy Institute is a pan-African public-interest strategy, research and institutional development institute headquartered in Somalia. We strengthen the institutions, knowledge systems, and financing frameworks that enable African countries to access, govern, and deploy climate, nature, biodiversity, and green transition finance more effectively.
Our Purpose
Why GFCSI Exists
Africa's transition towards climate-resilient, nature-positive, and low-emission development depends not only on increased financial resources, but equally on the strength of national institutions capable of planning, coordinating, financing, implementing, and governing that transition.
Across the continent, governments increasingly face complex responsibilities arising from international environmental agreements, expanding climate finance mechanisms, biodiversity commitments, carbon markets, sustainable finance frameworks, and rapidly evolving expectations for transparency and accountability. Many countries continue to encounter common challenges: limited institutional capacity, fragmented governance arrangements, insufficient technical expertise, constrained project preparation capabilities, and restricted access to international climate and sustainable finance.
GFCSI was established to address these structural challenges by strengthening the institutional foundations upon which successful green transitions depend. Rather than focusing solely on finance, the Institute supports the broader systems that enable finance to be accessed, managed, governed, and deployed effectively.
